A premium knife rewards a close look. Shoppers want to feel the weight of it, open it, and hear the story behind the steel. Our Benchmade shop-in-shop at Scheels allows the shopper that full experience.
Benchmade has made knives in Oregon since 1987, and it backs every one with LifeSharp, a free sharpening-for-life service built on the promise "Yours, for life." That story can't be told inside a display case. So when Benchmade set out to build its first dedicated footprint within Scheels, Lotus United designed and built it: the Benchmade Zone, a 13.5-by-11-foot corner shop-in-shop and the first of its kind for the brand. We set out to:
The design started with the product and the people who carry it. Benchmade sells across worlds that don't always overlap: everyday carry, hunting, tactical, the outdoors, and kitchen cutlery. The zone had to give each category its own home while still reading as one brand from across the aisle.
We pulled the material palette straight from the knives. A clean white powdercoat on perforated metal keeps the corner from going dark and heavy, hot rolled steel nods to the blades, and espresso-stained birch and warm wood slats echo the wood handles on the hunt and outdoor lines.

We worked the design in renderings, so the team and the brand were reacting to the actual space long before it was built. The first concept explored a larger 15-by-15 corner and led with a lit customization bar as the hero. From there the footprint tightened to 13.5 by 11, the storytelling wall and tune-up bar moved to the front, and the layout resolved into the space that went to fabrication.
With the layout locked, the design resolved into full color and finish, and the renderings below show the space as it would actually be built.
Every fixture was engineered and made to order in our factory, then finished for this exact space, and a few pieces do the heavy lifting:
The finished space does something a display case cannot: it lets a shopper spend time with the brand. Instead of scanning a wall of product, a shopper moves through categories organized by how people actually use knives, from everyday carry to hunting to the grill, which helps someone find the knife that fits their life rather than the one at eye level.
What makes the zone the first of its kind for Benchmade is that it turns the brand's promises into things a shopper can touch. The Magnacut steel explainer answers the question a premium price raises, the founder's story gives the knives a lineage, and the LifeSharp bar puts the lifetime sharpening guarantee out in the open, so the reason to come back is built into the space.
A shop-in-shop earns its place when it does something a shared display case can't. It gives a brand a fixed address inside a retailer it doesn't own, room to tell its own story, and a reason for a shopper to return again and again. For Benchmade, this display encapsulates the promise that its knives are "Yours, for Life," in a space unifying the story behind the brand that extends a single sale into a lifelong relationship.
